The National Research Council (CNR) of Italy is a public organization; its duty is to carry out, promote, spread, transfer and improve research activities in the main sectors of knowledge growth and of its applications for the scientific, technological, economic and social development of the Country. To this end, the activities of the organization are divided into macro areas of interdisciplinary scientific and technological research, concerning several sectors:bio-medicine, physical sciences and material technology, earth  system and environmental technology, chemical sciences and technologies of materials, engineer, ICT and technology for transports and energy, bio-agronomy, human and social sciences and cultural heritage.

The National Research Council is structured with 7 Scientific and Technological Departments (modification from 10 to 7 Department in progress). The main one is the Earth System and Environmental Technology Department (presently, the former Department of Earth and Environment is still in force; it will be replaced by the new Department in the next months), which will be directly involved in the EU Arctic Information Centre. The Department of Earth System and Environmental Technology employs more than one thousand and two hundred persons, half of which are scientists, and coordinates the activity of a number of Institutes in the field of Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Earth observations, Biometeorology, Oceanography, Polar sciences, etc.

A number of scientific environmental infrastructures are operated by the Department, such as Oceanographic vessels and Polar and High Altitude stations. The Department is tasked to co-ordinate the scientific implementation of the National Research Programme in Antarctica. In addition, it hosts the CNR Network of Polar Research- POLARNET. The Department of Earth System and Environmental Technology manages the CNR’s Arctic Station “Dirigibile Italia”, where several programmes in a wide range of environmental science are carried out.
