JIRP is an expeditionary field science school for undergraduate and early-stage graduate students interested in polar science. 30-35 students traverse 110 km across the Juneau Icefield from Juneau, AK to Atlin, BC each summer, learning about field glaciology, geophysics, glacial geology, climatology/meteorology and a number of other cryosphere-related topics from 20 faculty over two months. Students also gain glacier mountaineering, wilderness first aid, and other expeditionary training during this experience. We typically have six to eight focused research projects of current scientific interest, led by faculty, in which students actively participate. Recent projects have focused on radio-glaciology and other geophysical studies, isotope geochemistry, glacier mass balance, biogeochemistry, glacial geology, ecology, and geomatics/remote sensing. Summer-long field research student projects supervised by the faculty will culminate in presentations at AGU or other similar meetings.
