The course (AGF219) is part of the regular teaching at UNIS providing lectures on climate, economy, environment, navigation, infrastructure, risk factors, regulations, and geopolitics in the Arctic. The course gives the students an interdisciplinary view of sea transportation in the Arctic, which is expected to grow in the future. The reduction of the Arctic sea ice opens up new opportunities for exploitation of energy and other resources as well new transport routes between Europe, Asia and North America. The harsh conditions with sea ice, darkness, limitations of bathymetric charts, poor infrastructure and communication services put severe constraints on how ships can operate. The course provides new and cross-cutting knowledge which is useful for everybody who are involved in Arctic activities.
